TIME TRIALS

Time trials are held every Tuesday evening at 17:45, throughout summer and winter, with an attendance of up to 500 runners.

Time Trials are an excellent training tool. If you run a hard effort for a given distance or route, you will get a good sense of your current fitness levels. When you repeat this several times over the course of a training block, You will be able to measure your fitness and gauge how your speed is improving week on week.

Non-RAC members are welcome, and we often have young university graduates, or people from the neighborhood who want to stay fit and active. Runners can choose between the 5km and 8km route, and walkers can walk a 4km or 7km route.  Walkers usually start about 1km ahead of the runners to avoid congestion.

Our RAC time trial is a hilly route and is therefore 20 to 30 seconds slower than most other time trials. For years, it has been known for its competitiveness and older members like Bruce Fordyce often battled it out with guys like Mark Plaatjes.

The consistency of the weekly time trials has also helped to recruit a lot of new members.  People know where to find us and when we run.

After time trials, runners usually get together for a light meal and a few drinks on the lawn, which brings a nice social element to the club.

Tuesdays are also our club admin evening, for taking on new members, answering queries or issuing licenses.

In the months leading up to Comrades, we host informative talks and interactive sessions for runners, sharing advice, tips and trends with experienced runners and novices
